Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink shared thisThe news is out — I’m excited to share that I’m joining the founding leadership team at NextLadder Ventures to lead AI and technology work. Our goal is to invest in and accelerate AI-enabled solutions that support economic mobility for people across the country — a mission that has felt increasingly urgent to me. As AI reshapes our economic systems, we're facing a critical moment. We have a window to purposefully harness the AI transformation to help Americans build more secure and prosperous futures. But I know from my last decade of supporting AI and social impact work at Google that this won’t happen by default; it'll take focus, resources, and coordination to build trusted, people-centered solutions that increase agency and deliver outcomes. At NextLadder, we’ll help catalyze and accelerate that action — aligning capital, talent, and technology at the speed this moment demands. We’ll need to partner with many to fund differently, put tools in the hands of those closest to the challenges, break down fragmentation, and get creative about how new technology can help shift long-standing barriers. With a long-term mandate and the flexibility to work creatively, I’m hopeful NextLadder can help bridge the gap between AI’s potential and real impact for people at scale. I’m also thrilled to be joining Ryan Rippel, Rhett Dornbach-Bender, Callie Schwartz (Schneider), and Lauren Loktev as co-founders alongside the rest of the great NextLadder team. I’ll be starting in earnest in a few weeks (so yes, I will be taking a break!) and can’t wait to start building alongside so many thoughtful and innovative leaders already doing incredible work.Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink shared thisNextLadder Ventures is on a mission to equip tens of millions of Americans with highly personalized, tech-enabled Navigation Technology tools that help them navigate life’s challenges and reach greater economic mobility. And we just welcomed two powerhouse leaders who will help catalyze the market for these “NavTech” tools. We are thrilled to have Lauren Loktev join us as Managing Director of Investments and Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink as Managing Director of Product. Lauren brings 15 years of venture capital experience, including as a Partner at the Collaborative Fund, and a strong track record of backing breakout companies at their earliest stages. Under Lauren’s leadership, we’re excited to build NextLadder’s venture practice and back the founders building the next generation NavTech tools. Brigitte comes to us after spending over a decade at Google, including most recently as Director of AI and Social Impact. At NextLadder, Brigitte will lead AI and product strategy across our portfolio, backing solutions and setting market-wide standards for how NavTech tools are designed, evaluated, and improved over time. Lauren and Brigitte join a co-founding leadership team that also includes CEO Ryan Rippel, Chief Strategy and Operations Officer Rhett Dornbach-Bender, and Chief of Staff Callie Schwartz (Schneider). Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink shared thisAfter 12+ amazing years, I wrapped up my time at Google last week. When I started, I couldn't imagine all that this work would mean to me — the people I would meet and count as friends, the wild opportunities and challenges we would take on, and the work home that Google would become. I’m so grateful for it all. I joined Google.org to accelerate how emerging technology is applied for social impact. It's been a privilege to support organizations and partner with our Google teams to do just that as we navigated tech cycles (from the early days of mobile to the waves of AI development) and waves of societal change. To the many innovators and leaders, fellow funders, and thought partners: thank you for letting me be part of this work with you and for the incredible impact you have for people and our planet. Of course, the work isn’t always easy, but I luckily got to learn from and navigate the complexity with the best of the best. To my Google teammates and leaders: thank you for your steady commitment, your friendship, and for always asking “why not?” You are brilliant, passionate, creative, curious, and kind. I'll always be cheering for you. My time here also taught me to keep my eyes on the horizon. We are navigating a profound moment that’s shifting both what’s possible and what’s needed. I plan to continue rolling up my sleeves alongside so many of you to help advance and accelerate how AI is deployed for meaningful impact. More soon on what’s next!

Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink reposted thisAI is moving fast. The frameworks being built to govern it in the nonprofit sector will be built on someone’s data. Make sure it’s yours. And ours. Our partners at NTEN and our team at The Bridgespan Group are running a 15-minute survey on how nonprofits are actually making decisions about AI. Unlike other AI surveys, this is about governance and practices, not just uses and perceptions. The findings will shape what the field believes, funds, and builds next. Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink reposted thisBrigitte Hoyer Gosselink reposted thisAI-enabled scientific breakthroughs have been recognized at the highest levels, including the Nobel Prize. But many of the teams trying to translate discovery into real-world impact are still operating without the resources they need. The ‘valley of death' between breakthrough and deployment remains one of the most underfunded parts of the system. That work doesn’t fit neatly anywhere: too applied for traditional research funding, too early or complex for venture, yet *essential* if we want scientific progress to translate into societal progress. It's part of the inspiration behind last year's Google.org AI for Science fund, and why we're continuing to support this work. This week, applications opened for our next cohort and it comes with more bells and whistles :) If you’re building at the intersection of AI and scientific progress, I’d really encourage you to apply and spread the word before our deadline on 17 April. Selected organizations will receive funding and support through the Google.org Accelerator. For more info, check out: g.co/impactchallenge/aisci #AIforScience

Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink reposted thisBrigitte Hoyer Gosselink reposted thisAgainst all the odds GiveDirectly is growing rapidly, and we're hiring for some *amazing* and unique roles right now, particularly in partnerships and fundraising 👇 Despite huge disruption in the humanitarian sector, in 2025 we were able to almost double the amount of money we committed to people in need, and we hit $1B delivered since founding. Our partnerships and fundraising teams don't work like most NGOs. + We're lean; a team of ~20 raised ~$250m+ in 2025, spending only 4c for each $1 raised. + We're data driven and tech enabled; we follow the evidence and are investing significantly in enabling our team. + Giving cash uniquely combines a deep evidence base with radical dignity and extraordinary scalability. + We aim big; in our programmatic work and our fundraising, we set ourselves up to pursue big bets and avoid incrementalism. + Our existing donors are amazing, and are amongst the most successful and generous people across tech, finance, and major philanthropies. Four critical senior positions are available: 1) Senior Director of Philanthropy: Lead a $100m+ annual portfolio of major donors. Suits someone with a strong background in private individual major giving. 2) Director of Individual Giving: Lead a $50m+ portfolio of work reaching, acquiring, retaining and upgrading small dollar donors. Suits a growth marketer or structured, analytical and tech driven storyteller. 3) Head of US Government Relations: lead our work interfacing with the US Federal government; including congress and the state department. Suits a former senior congressional staffer or public servant deep in the weeds of US foreign assistance. 4) Senior Manager, Philanthropy (Bay Area): Anchor our relationships with the tech and AI ecosystem in SF. Senior roles at GiveDirectly are not just about managing teams or allocating resources; we're looking for exceptional and ambitious people excited to get their hands dirty, be in the weeds, and act as "player coaches" who show how it's done and support their small teams to be the best they can be. Please SHARE to help us find the right people; these roles have the potential to have huge impact. Position descriptions in comments.

Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink reposted thisBrigitte Hoyer Gosselink reposted thisAbsolutely Incredible Job Alert 🔥🛰️ The Earth Fire Alliance is hiring a senior partnerships/sales lead to make the FireSat constellation a reality. This is one of the coolest roles to go live in the climate and resilience space in a long time. My team at Google has been working hand-in-glove with the Earth Fire Alliance to launch FireSat—a constellation of satellites designed to detect a garage-sized wildfire anywhere on Earth, within 20 minutes. The first protoflight launched last year, and the team is actively working to scale to the full constellation of 52 satellites. I don't say this lightly, but if you want a path to directly shape how the world detects and responds to wildfires, this is it. If this sounds like you... 🔥🛰️ You’re an experienced sales or partnership exec with a proven track record of closing $XXM deals, thriving in a fast-paced environment. 🔥🛰️ You’re a pro at navigating complex U.S. federal agencies (think NASA, NOAA, and DOI) and state agencies, and you know how to turn high-level conversations into long-term, impactful wins. 🔥🛰️ You bring a team-first mindset and care about the communities, first responders, and ecosystems you’ll be helping to protect. ...then apply! Or DM me if we know each other. https://lnkd.in/gbivz5Jy I know so many world-class sales and BD leaders from my Opower days and across the tech ecosystem who could be fantastic for this role, or would know the right person. Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink liked thisBrigitte Hoyer Gosselink liked thisOur discussion at the CLOSE IT SUMMIT on AI and workers kicked off with the question: in the future, will AI create a utopia or dystopia when it comes to jobs? My answer: Both. At the same time. For different people. And that’s usually the answer in our country that I love so deeply because of our inequities—e.g., we are #1 for medical and scientific breakthroughs, and we are #1 for maternal mortality among wealthy nations. So why wouldn’t we also become #1 for the AI/jobs utopia and #1 for the AI/jobs dystopia… unless we proactively intervene? Here’s what I shared: 📛 DYSTOPIAN - Take a young man with a high school degree who taught himself to code at night while working a retail job by day. Now there's a vacuum of entry-level coding jobs because of tools like Claude Code. His planned path to a middle-class career has narrowed — maybe disappeared. Meanwhile, his retail job: BLS predicts retail will lose more jobs in the next 10 years than any other industry. He is going to hear about AI breakthroughs in curing diseases, but if he is forced to join the 28 million (and growing) Americans without health insurance, he may not benefit from them. 🌻 UTOPIAN - Now take an experienced manager at a strong employer. She’s looking at less grunt work, more time for higher-level judgment and leadership, and an ability to pursue ideas that are newly feasible due to AI. She’ll benefit from incredible, AI-driven advances in healthcare because she has top-tier employer health insurance. Maybe her equity generates enough wealth to retire early, thanks to the AI-driven boom in her company's stock price. Maybe there’s even more time for family and fun. Same technologies. Same moment. Completely different realities. The most important question isn’t just utopia vs. dystopia, but rather: 1️⃣ How might we build solutions now to ensure that the fewest number of us possible face the dystopian scenario? This means adequate support when we're unemployed or underemployed as well as investment to discover, prepare for, and transition to new work. 2️⃣ How might we expand the circle of those of us who get to experience something closer to an AI utopia -- in our education, interaction with the social safety net, workplaces, healthcare, and more?

Fund for Shared Insight and Segal Family Foundation recently released an insightful case study: “Trusting Local Leadership: A Funder Builds Relationships in Sub‑Saharan Africa.” While rooted in a specific regional context, the lessons it offers about power, proximity, and trust are universal for anyone seeking to fund or support lasting social change. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eZm4BFkM Key Takeaways to Embrace: · Build relationships before investments. Centering relationships and deep listening—not checklists or timelines—lays the foundation for more authentic and sustainable partnerships. · Shift power by letting communities lead. Impact accelerates when resources are directed by those most proximate to the work, and most accountable to the outcomes. · Fund flexibly and trust generously. Adaptive, trust-based approaches enable community-led innovation to thrive and respond in real time. · Measure what matters to communities. Elevating local definitions of success ensures that impact is not just counted, but truly felt. This case study is a compelling call to action across global philanthropy, social innovation, and movement-building spaces. It challenges us to move beyond transactional funding models toward relational, equity-centered practices. This is exactly the kind of mindset shift Social Venture Partners International is committed to. As we advance our new Affiliate Principles across the SVP Global Network, we are doubling down on: · Centering equity by funding in ways that dismantle, not reinforce, systemic inequities · Amplifying community voice by shifting power to those closest to the work · Practicing trust and accountability by showing up as learning partners, not gatekeepers · Pursuing systems change with humility, collaboration, and courage For me, this case study doesn’t just affirm our direction, it sharpens it. And, I hope this piece sparks reflection and inspires shifts for you all as well, wherever you may sit in the Ecosystem, by reflecting and acting on these key questions: How are we centering local leadership, in any geography? What would it look like to build true partnerships, not just programs? #TrustBasedPhilanthropy #ShiftThePower #CommunityLedChange #GlobalPhilanthropy #LocalLeadership #SVPI #SVPGlobalNetwork #EquityInAction #ProximateLeaders

Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms – supported by Mutual Aid Sudan Coalition – show what’s possible when humanitarian response is led by communities themselves: fast, accountable, and rooted in dignity. This op-ed by Andrea Tracy and Tom Perriello (former U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan) in Inside Philanthropy makes a powerful case for why funders must urgently back these locally led efforts – especially as traditional systems struggle to reach those most at risk. Well worth reading and sharing. 🤲🏽 #Sudan #EyesOnSudan #MutualAidSudanCoalition #ERRs

"Unlikely partnerships can unlock extraordinary impact” - that’s the message from The Rockefeller Foundation's CEO Rajiv J. Shah in Delivering Results: The Power of Unlikely Partnerships – the Foundation’s latest impact report. It’s a powerful reminder that to drive change at scale, especially in today’s complex world, we need to work across sectors, disciplines, and borders. When it comes to climate and health, the old silos no longer serve us. We must build new alliances across finance, data, and delivery systems - and that’s exactly what we’re doing. As climate change reshapes global health, our work is focused on: - Health systems in crisis: Climate shocks are overwhelming care systems. A resilient, system-wide response is urgently needed. - Data-driven local action: From Honduras to Thailand, real-time data is helping communities fight disease. 4,200 workers trained, 12M+ people reached. - Health at the heart of climate action: Through initiatives like the World Health Organization - World Meteorological Organization Joint Programme, supported by our $11.5M investment with Wellcome Trust, we can integrate climate considerations into health planning and response efforts. This year’s report shows how, alongside our partners, we’ve reached 530 million people worldwide - and how meaningful change is still possible, even in a time of growing complexity and uncertainty. Only through bold, cross-sector collaboration can we protect the health and wellbeing of the 3.3 billion people most vulnerable to climate threats. We're often asked abroad, how much does the evidence from the Center for Effective Philanthropy on funders apply to their local context, or is it purely for the US context only? Well, today we released a new research report on the what grantees of European based funders have to say about them, with comparisons to what they say about their US funders. Check it out!

Charities and donor-advised funds (DAFs) engaging in venture philanthropy typically invest through venture capital (VC) funds, acquiring indirect stakes in startups. This structure denies DAFs an insurable interest in the lives of founders or key personnel at those portfolio companies, as the DAF does not own the firms directly. NRP offers a superior alternative: direct deal flow enabling DAFs to invest in early-stage science and technology ventures aligned with the DAFs’ missions, bypassing funds entirely. VC funds rarely buy life insurance (term or whole life) on key persons. They demand such coverage within investee companies themselves, while fund-level policies are usually prohibited, and in any case, limited partners resist the 2/20 fee structure subsidizing an insurance strategy. DAFs face no such restrictions. They can legally own life insurance on donors, their own staff, and key individuals at directly invested private firms—even if the firm holds its own key-person policy. A DAF's independent policy avoids the firm's claims processes or governance, which could dilute benefits. Direct payouts to the DAF maximize utility. Applied across a portfolio of (for example) 40 firms, this strategy amplifies impact. The probability of a death benefit within five years rises substantially, creating a hedge against venture risks. These inflows should embolden DAFs to deploy more capital into high-potential science/tech innovations. On the other hand, if just one firm is to be invested in, it helps reduce that risk also. Venture philanthropy already advances missions effectively. Integrating permissible life insurance elevates it, turning mortality risks into probabilistic returns. Tragically, traditional VC funds foreclose this synergy. https://lnkd.in/gcCjE88n
