I am IBM’s Chief Client Innovation Officer and the IBM Enterprise Security Executive. I oversee the delivery of advanced service solutions, offering clients predictive and preventive technical IT support for both IBM and multi-vendor infrastructures. I lead a team that forges strategic partnerships with top-tier technology providers to guarantee best-in-class compute, storage, and networking solutions for 14,000 IBM clients in more than 140 countries. Under my leadership, the organization embarked on a strong digital transformation, revamping its go-to-market strategy with an integrated datacenter approach and AI-based solutions.
I also oversee IBM’s CISO organization responsible for delivering security in IBM's products, client offerings, and internal operations. As a steward of the enterprise cybersecurity mission, I collaborate with IBM's governance organizations, senior leaders, and Board of Directors to fortify IBM's cybersecurity strategy and response globally.
Throughout my career, I have built and led multi-billion-dollar businesses, scaled organizations, and driven business transformation across industries. I’ve held multiple executive positions within IBM Software, encompassing cutting-edge technologies. I also managed the acquisition and integration of more than 20 acquired firms, managing over US$10 billion in associated revenues focused on both organic and inorganic development.
In IBM Hardware, I led the IBM Storage organization, focusing on the acceleration of software for new workloads, like AI. I led the design, development, and delivery of complex server hardware including chip design, chip packaging, and transactional hardware. During my tenure in hardware development, I partnered with Quantum Research to pioneer client-facing electronic designs and the creation of a quantum ecosystem. I continue to be an executive advocate for quantum computing and the growth of the IBM Quantum Network
Outside of work I’m passionate about advancing career opportunities for all individuals in Technology. I’m on the Board of Trustees at Wake Technical Community College, and I serve as a member of the External Advisory Council to the Vice-Chancellor of Research for the University of Tennessee. I also sit in the governing board of the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF).
I love to traveling and learning about new cultures, including the history and architecture of the places that I visit.

IBM has long been a steward of #innovation, a company focused on the long term success of their clients and of individuals. The Master’s is the most iconic of golf events - proud of tradition and of the many winners created from this event. I grew up mostly in Tennessee, but I was born in Lousiville, GA, right down the road from Augusta - Augusta was the big city people traveled to for a night out. I grew up with the legend of #BobbyJones, with uncles who were great at golf and with a cousin who played in the #PGA. The Master’s was an icon of beauty, from those towering pines underpinned by the azaleas - every accomplished gardener knows that these plants love pine straw. My extended family are Georgians - My Grandfather who started the regional bus stop in Lousiville, and my Grandmother who lived down a red dirt road her entire life. When I see the Master's course, I think of those pine trees on that farm in Georgia. I am a bit partial to Rory McIlroy this week - after all, my Mother is a McNeely. Jamie Thomas shared thisI had the opportunity to join the AI Tennessee Summit at the #CountryMusicHallofFame this week kicked off by Vasileios Maroulas, PhD and Donde Plowman - the momentum across government, academia, and industry was unmistakable. Across two days of conversations, one thing became very clear: Tennessee isn’t just experimenting with AI. It’s laying the groundwork for collaborations that will define the state’s AI future. Lynne Parker reminded us in her keynote that “AI leadership is a choice, not an accident,” and that most pilots fail not because of the tech, but because of organizational inertia and workforce readiness. Senator Marsha Blackburn highlighted the growing importance of deepfake protections and mitigating bias, critical issues as adoption accelerates. Deputy Governor and Commissioner of Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Stuart McWhorter ’s perspective on Tennessee’s economic opportunity made it clear the state is moving with intention. The Summit also underscored that the workforce of the future is a priority, and that hiring alone won’t close the gap. Tennessee’s advantage will come from AI literacy and preparing talent for fast‑growing sectors from manufacturing to healthcare. As #AI and #quantum begin to converge, states that build strong AI foundations today will be positioned to lead in what comes next. Jamie Thomas liked thisJamie Thomas liked this10 years ago today, on May 4, 2016, we made the world's first quantum computer accessible through a web service. What people don't always know is that we built the IBM Quantum Experience web service in less than 3 months. Three months to build the software/cloud team, design the architecture, define the user experience, build the front-end, create the APIs, set up the cloud infrastructure, from Europe, connecting it to a real superconducting quantum processor sitting in a dilution refrigerator at Yorktown, and turn the abstract notation of theorists into something anyone in the world could click, drag, and run. It happened because of an extraordinary team. Led at the time by Darío Gil, and after building a mockup and running weekly meetings with Jay Gambetta, Jerry M. Chow, and and Mark Ritter, I convinced Paco Martín Fernández, Fran Cabrera, and Jorge Carballo to join the team, and we started this long journey together. And then May 4 happened. We refreshed the page that morning not knowing if anyone would show up. By the end of the second week, more than 17,000 people had registered. That moment, realizing we had built something the world was actually waiting for, is one I'll carry forever. A few lessons from that sprint that I keep coming back to, 10 years later: Accept the challenge before you feel ready. We didn't have all the answers. We had a deadline and a belief. Move faster than feels comfortable. Speed is a forcing function for clarity. Three months left no room for the wrong abstractions. Pay attention to your team, really pay attention. The product was the team. The culture we built in those late nights is what made the technology possible, not the other way around. A decade later, quantum on the cloud is a reality. Hundreds of thousands of users. Thousands of papers. A whole generation of quantum developers who didn't exist as a profession before that day. To everyone who was part of those first 3 months, from quantum hardware to classical servers, all the software, design, legal, comms, and the many small pieces behind the scenes, thank you. We changed something. It was great working on that project. See you in the future.

Jamie Thomas liked thisJamie Thomas liked thisTen years, 240,000 users, 300 ecosystem partners, 5,900 research papers, and the world’s largest fleet of quantum computers. It’s been a remarkable journey, and it started with a single step: On 4 May 2016, IBM put the first quantum computer on the cloud. Remote access to quantum hardware was revolutionary, but it wasn’t the hardest part. The real challenge was devising a way to calibrate our device so the system was always tuned up and ready to go whenever a user wanted to run a job. It may sound like a small detail, but until that point, the traditional quantum workflow involved calibrating the device and running the experiment in the same session. We envisioned a future where we’d calibrate a device once a day and let many users run their experiments. It was, and is, a significant challenge but for us, it was a non-negotiable. It was about building something usable and, eventually, useful. This spirit carries through to everything we do today. Our mission is to bring useful quantum computing to the world. Within two weeks we had over 17,000 registered users. Since then, the team has achieved many quantum firsts: • First QC (quantum computer) on the cloud — IBM Quantum Experience (5 qubits), 4 May 2016 • First quantum SDK — Qiskit, 2017 • First QC commercial ecosystem — IBM Quantum Network, 2018 • First QC designed for deployment— IBM Quantum System One, 2019 • First quantum developer advocate (Qiskit Advocate) program, 2019 • First quantum datacenter — Poughkeepsie, 2019 • First detailed multi-year quantum hardware roadmap — 2020 • First QPU (Eagle) to break 100 qubits, 2021 • First quantum developer certificate program, 2021 • First demonstration of quantum utility — executing a quantum circuit beyond exact classical simulation, 2023 • First QC designed for modular scaling — IBM Quantum System Two, 2023 • Released Qiskit 1.0- the most performant quantum sdk for utility scale experiments, 2024 • First QC datacenter in Europe — Ehningen, 2024 • First quantum-centric supercomputing demonstrations integrating QPU + HPC, 2024 • First commercial platform for application integration— enabling the quantum startup ecosystem with Qiskit Functions, 2024 • First QPU (loon) designed for LDPC codes, 2025 • First demonstration of utility scale dynamic circuits, 2025 With 91 systems deployed to date in key data centers managed by us and our partners all around the world: • The University of Tokyo 2021 • Cleveland Clinic 2023 • PINQ² - Plateforme d'innovation numérique et quantique 2023 • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 2024 • Yonsei University 2024 • RIKEN 2025 • Basque Quantum (BasQ) 2025 • Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park Projected 2026 • Quantum Valley Projected 2026 My most heartfelt thanks to our users, our partners, and to the team here at IBM Quantum for making this all possible. Jamie Thomas liked thisJamie Thomas liked thisToday at #THINK26, researchers from Cleveland Clinic, RIKEN, and IBM showed the largest known quantum computing-powered simulation of two proteins, T4-Lysozyme and Trypsin, reaching a scale of 12,635 atoms through a new algorithm and quantum‑centric supercomputing workflow: https://lnkd.in/eQHsUDxv The results not only demonstrate a ~40-fold increase in system size compared to work from just six months earlier, but also a 210-fold improvement in accuracy during a key step of the workflow. To reach these new levels of scale and accuracy, the researchers orchestrated the Fugaku (RIKEN) and Miyabi-G (The University of Tokyo and University of Tsukuba) supercomputers alongside two 156-qubit IBM Quantum Heron r2 processors, using up to 94 qubits to run 9,200 circuits over more than 100 hours and collect 1.3 billion measurement outcomes, making this work the largest quantum‑centric supercomputing execution for quantum chemistry to date. But advanced hardware is only part of the story. A new method, EWF‑TrimSQD, improves how large molecules can be fragmented into smaller, tractable clusters that quantum and classical systems solve together, depending on complexity.
