Jonathan Rykman liked thisJonathan Rykman liked this“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop to look around once in a while, you might miss it.” -Ferris Bueller. Also, me at POSSIBLE! Last quarter, my role was unexpectedly eliminated at SWYM, so it was my first POSSIBLE as a free agent, attending with a few Madisco Ventures partners. So goes startup life in the current market! Grateful to all of the brands and agencies that gave us their trust; testing the bounds of existing frameworks, applying intelligent AI to programmatic outcomes from the inside out. I believe in what SWYM is building and always happy to make connections to our incredible founders carrying the business forward. So, being intentional about the future, wanting to sharpen my POV on what's needed and what's next, I booked a ticket to POSSIBLE. There’s no shortage of opportunity, but there is a real shortage of differentiation. I want to feel what will breakout or fizzle in AI adoption circles. Where are people getting stuck? Of course connecting with 10,000 of my closest friends was nice too. (Lou Paskalis called it "planned serendipity" - love this) 3 key themes I took home: 1) The "IG vs Reality of AI fluency" Our industry is talking about AI constantly, but not actually engaging with it deeply. On stage, it’s everywhere. On the ground I heard “I don’t have time” "haven't really tried yet" or “Company X added AI to augment discovery or planning” followed by limited adoption and a return to old workflows. Maybe I live in a bubble in SF, but the limited meaningful uptake was suprising. 2) AI's Need for Vertical Categorization. We need category specificity to how we talk about AI. LLMs/wrappers, agentic systems, search, content creation, and robotics with reasoning are different technologies with distinct use cases. Using "AI" to ask personal questions, is not an orchestration layer where 50 agents can participate as needed in flow with one another. Flattening all into “AI,” can create a false sense of fluency, which could lead to overconfidence in some areas and underinvestment in others. 3) The re-invigoration of the non-technical visionary. The best conversations I had all week were show-and-tells, comparing what each of us had been building. Execs who never took a coding class past CS 101, but have built marketing, sales, and business ideas into reality, were in hands-on “show me" exchanges filled with energy. There’s a spark I haven’t seen in years and this was very cool to be a part of. I encourage everyone to ask others "how did you do that" - watch, pay attention, try. Fail. Try again - I promise you will only fail for like 10 minutes. Rising tides lift all boats. And on the topic of boats - see you in Cannes! 🛥️

And for the first time in a long time, I'm not thinking about pay-per-call chaos, term violations, or whose fault the latest industry mess is. Before I left, I had a conversation with a friend. I told her my legacy won't be the amount of money I made. It'll be the life I gave myself, my family, and the people who've been with me through it all. That landed differently when I said it out loud. I've built something I'm proud of. But I've also spent years absorbing stress. Stepping back, even just for a few weeks, has a way of making that very clear. That's the version of success I actually want.

CMO’s and agencies are so enamored with bottom-funnel targeting tactics that they totally lost the ability to move people effectively—their judgement is out of balance with real needs today. The targeting down funnel ‘disease’ gives marketers a feeling that they aren’t being wasteful but so much is showing they aren’t being effective either. “This ….reveals …a fundamental mismatch. Respondents are applying bottom-of-funnel tactics to what they've identified as top-of-funnel brand building objectives.”
